Brookline has several local schools
to serve the needs of the neighborhood children. There are public and
parochial elementary and secondary schools, offering parents a variety
of choices in education for their kids.
As for elementary parochial schools
there is Brookline Regional Catholic, located on Pioneer Avenue, which consists
of students from Resurrection, Loreto and St. Pius parishes. Resurrection and
Loreto schools closed in 1996 and the three schools were merged into
one.
Public elementary schools include West
Liberty Elementary on Dunster Street, Brookline Elementary on Woodbourne Avenue,
and Carmalt Academy of Science and Technology on Breining Street. Children in
the middle school years can attend South Brook Middle School, located near West
Liberty Academy, or South Hills Middle School, located on Crane Avenue in
Beechview.
For secondary education, there
are Brashear High School (public) and Seton-LaSalle High School (parochial).
Brashear was built in 1974 and is comprised of students from several defunct
public schools, including the old South Hills High School. Seton-LaSalle
is a merger between the South Hills Catholic and Elizabeth Seton High Schools,
which both closed in 1979. The new school is located in the old South Hills
Catholic building off of McNeilly Road.
For those with special needs, there is
Pioneer Education Center, located next to West Liberty Elementary on Dunster
Street. The school is equipped to meet the demands of the physically challenged.
Until the summer of 2003, there was also DePaul Institute, a nationally renowned
school for the deaf and hearing impaired. That school, located on Dorchester
Avenue, has moved to a new location in Shadyside after nearly 100 years in
Brookline.
Many years ago there was also Toner
Institute, a military-type academy located near DePaul. Toner's doors have long
since closed.
In addition to the fine academic programs
offered at Brookline area schools, there are also some excellent extra-curricular
and athletic programs to challenge our kids physically. Many of our schools teams
have gone on to win diocesan and state championships in a variety of
sports.

Below are
links to some of the history of our local schools. We've included a few
class photos and pictures of various school athletic teams. There are
also a few stray photos of events, like fundraisers. |
