Brookline School Gardens - 1916
|
Brookline Elementary School was the first Pittsburgh school to have its own garden to provide fresh vegetables and such for the student population. In fact, it was the students themselves who did most of the gardening in their spare time and during school breaks. The garden was located between Pioneer Avenue and Wedgemere. From the looks of things, these kids were first class farmers, which was an appropriate observation considering that the Brookline area was once a prosperous farming community. The first two photos were taken on July 18, 1916, and the photo at the bottom some time in 1920. |
