Sean Bayens lands a solid right
in competition for the Pittsburgh Boxing Club

The Pittsburgh Boxing Club is Brookline's newest Boxing Club, based out of the Brookline Recreation Center in East Brookline at Brookline Park. In some ways, it is an extension of the former Brookline Boxing Club, one of the most successful boxing clubs in Western Pennsylvania for nearly 50 years.

The new club is led by new Center Director Michelle "Mickey" Underwood. Instructions are led by retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant and former Brookline Boxing Club instructor, Mike Bayens. His fellow instructors include Pittsburgh policeman and former Brookline boxing champion Carlos Schrader, and retired Marine and former Brookline champion Robert Brown. Workouts began in April of 2005, and under their skillful guidance, the club continues the tradition of Brookline boxing excellence.

To date, over thirty adults and children have enrolled in the club and preparation for the 2005-2006 Golden/Silver Gloves season is underway. A few of the Club's fighters have already competed in area competition, and a new era of Brookline Boxing has begun.

Workouts are held every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday night, beginning at 6:30pm at the Brookline Memorial Recreation Center. The club is open to children and adults ages 8 and over. The cost of membership is $50, which includes a passbook, American Mountain Association registration, jersey, equipment and other incidental costs. Members are required to obtain bag gloves, mouthpiece and hand-wraps, be able to run 2 miles, and have the determination to work hard to succeed. The workouts are tough, but the end results are gratification, pride, team spirit and the skills necessary to excel, both personally and competitively. It's more than just boxing.
