Building Danny McGibbeny Field
Leveling and Developing

Photo of land being leveled.

After a lot of pressure from parents and Little League officials, and the threat of a cancelled season in 1976, development of the new field began in earnest in the summer of 1976.

The outlining drainage gutters were laid out first, then the huge earthmover leveled the field. Finally, the top soil was painstakingly spread by one man and a tractor. The field was completed in June of 1977, and ready for play in July.

The first game on the new Senior field was played in July 1977 and was won by the Brookline Lions Club over Stebbrook Healthland. I played in that particular game and remember how strange it was playing on such a large field, especially after the pint-sized field we were used to. Danny McGibbeny was the coach of Stebbrook's team at the time. He passed away later that year and the field was named after him in October of 1977.
