The Liberty Tunnels, finished in 1924, opened the South Hills area up like never before. The increased accessibility to the city made areas like Brookline attractive to the average working family. A population boom ensued. This is the South Portal, at the intersection of West Liberty Avenue and Saw Mill Run Boulevard (Rt. 51), in the late 1940's.
