"THE PIPE"
A Brookline Landmark Gone Forever - 1975

Picture of The Pipe, 1975.

Anyone who grew up in East Brookline in the 1960's and early 1970's has to remember "The Pipe". When we were little kids, the fastest shortcut to the fields was down the hill into the ravine, over the pipe, and up the hill to the Community Center. Two streams converged near there and made their way along the valley floor to Saw Mill Run Creek. The older boys used to walk across the pipe, while the younger ones would sit down on the metal and shimmy across.

During the 1975 landfilling for the new park, the pipe was buried.

The picture above shows the pipe's last day above ground. Soon it would be gone forever, and its legacy lost to the newer generations. This photo is the final snapshot of a local landmark, one that will never be forgotten.
