The
Old Recreation Building
Known as "The Blockhouse"

These next three pictures show the 1962 construction of the original recreation building on the upper level near the old farmhouse. This was actually only the basement of a much larger building which was supposed to be built later that decade. However, the money never materialized and this structure, along with the farmhouse, served as the "recreation center." These buildings were the main activities centers until the new Brookline Memorial Recreation Center building was erected in 1970 on the lower level of the park. |

Another view of the construction, which was done mostly with volunteer labor. This was to be only the foundation of a larger structure, but lack of further funding scrapped those plans. The "blockhouse", as it was called, became Brookline's recreation building for the next 10 years. Note the new playground equipment and picnic benches in the background. |

This last construction view shows a little bit of heavy lifting to maneuver the ceiling girders into place. It was also at this time that the land on the upper plateau was excavated and donated landfill placed in a bid to expand the area for the addition of basketball and tennis courts. |

This final view shows the building shortly before its demolition to make room for the development of Brookline Park. It was run down and had seen better days, but the memories of the glory days of the sixties have cemented its spot in Brookline Park history. |
