Community Center Carnival Kickoff Parade - 1965

Picture of
Kickoff Parade on Brookline Boulevard, 1965.

This picture was taken in July 1965 from near the cannon on Brookline Boulevard. Leading the way here are the Brookline Cub Scout Den 6. The parade is heading towards the Community Center for the yearly fundraising carnival held near the old farmhouse.

Note the Mobil station where there is now a Co-Go's, and the fine brickwork around the trolley tracks on Brookline Boulevard. Those bricks, and tracks, are still there under the asphalt pavement, and during the winter pothole season are sometimes visible on our main thorofare.

The photo below shows the opening festivities before the start of the carnival. Note the rendition of the proposed Community Center Recreation Building whose construction was the motivating force behind this fundraiser. Today, we have the Ressi Fun Flair and the St. Pius Expo, but the old Community Center Carnivals were the ones that set the stage for those that followed.

A last note on the old Community Center Recreation Building and the carnival in 1965 ...

The photo below was sent to me from a visitor from the northside of Pittsburgh in 2002. A home was being remodeled and when they tore up the kitchen floor they found this large poster board underneath. It looks quite similar to the poster board adorning the Recreation Center Building in the photo above from the 1965 ceremony. Almost 40 years later it resurfaces in pretty good condition it seems. I wish we could have gotten that one for our collection.
