Brookline has been on the maps for
nearly two centuries. Well, almost. It may once have been considered lower
West Liberty Borough but the boulevard has always been Brookline Boulevard
and the surrounding hills have been refered to as Brookline since the days
following the American Revolution.
Unfortunately, our photographic
history dates back only a little over a century. For a good look at what
things might have been like back in the days when the Indians were on
the warpath and the early settlers sought the protection of the British
garrison at Fort Pitt, a trip to the Fort Pitt Museum is the best remedy. It is a fascinating
place and the scale models are a real trip back in time.
For our purposes here we can take
you back as far as the early 1900s. Over the last few years, we have
obtained quite a collection of old photographs of the Brookline area
from the ten decades of the 20th century. We went out with camera in hand
and took several photos from similar vantage points. These old and new photos
should provide us all with an interesting look at the similarities, and
contrasts, between the past and present. |
