Brookline
Boulevard and Pioneer Avenue - 2000
Now and Then
|
Here is the new CVS Pharmacy at the corner of Brookline Boulevard and Pioneer Avenues. It is the first major change to Brookline Boulevard's business district since Mazza Pavilion was built back in 1982. The new pharmacy opened its doors in November, 2000. Below are photos from 1999, during construction and before construction began, showing the corner the way it looked for nearly a century. Gone are Nolan's Hardware, the duplex that was once Brookline Pharmacy, and the corner building that was Giorgio's Pizza (a gas station once sat on this spot.) Three homes on the corner of Berkshire Ave. and Pioneer were also demolished. The alleyway has been diverted to exit onto Berkshire Avenue. These buildings were a part of Brookline for, in some cases, close to 100 years. It is strange looking at this modern pharmacy now standing on the corner, but progress deems that some things must change. Amazingly, Allegheny County houses the second largest senior population in America, second only to South Florida's Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area. |
