This photo shows a throng of Brookliners participating in the July 4th parade in 1920. The parade was an annual event for years and this one was sponsored by the Brookline Board of Trade. This photo was taken at the corner of Glenarm and Brookline Boulevard, near where St. Marks Church stands today.

Here is a photo from the Fourth of July Parade back in 1929 and the students, from Brookline School, are waving their flags with patriotic fervor.

Note the gentleman in the white ballcap. This is Professor Joseph F. Moore, long-time principle at Brookline School and the Chairman of the Brookline Savings and Trust. Professor Moore was a pillar in the Brookline community, a man who may have done more for the community than any individual before or since. His efforts to bring quality academic and recreational facilities to Brookline were responsible for such community assets as Brookline Elementary School and Moore Park.

 - 1961

Here is a photo from the Fourth of July Parade in 1961, taken from the second floor of 1017 Brookline Boulevard, the Park Side Grill. The photo shows the crowd gathering at the Brookline Monument, or the cannon. The Boulevard shows the trolley tracks and red brick surface that was such a common site at the time.

Brookline no longer has a fourth of July parade. For years there was a parade every year. I do not know when or why the tradition stopped. I'm sure it was a great way to get together on a nice summer day and spend time with friends and neighbors. Oh well, we still have the Memorial Day Parade.
