The Brookline Monument - "The Cannon"

The Brookline
 Monument.

The Brookline Monument, better known as "The Cannon" has been a mainstay on Brookline Boulevard for many years, dating back to the 1930s. Presently, an old World War II artillery piece stands watch over Brookline's busy business district. The monument is located in Triangle Park, a small island situated between Brookline Boulevard, Queensboro and Chelton Avenues.

A fine marble and bronze Veteran's Memorial commemorates local soldiers that have fought in conflicts from World War I through the Gulf Wars. The small park has a few benches and the flower garden is maintained by local community groups. The cannon is also a favorite amongst the youngsters, who like to climb aboard and turn the wheels.

The present day Cannon is actually the second rendition of the Brookline Monument. Ironically, the original cannon, an old World War I artillery piece, was melted down during a World War II scrap metal drive in 1942. After the war, a new cannon arrived and was dedicated in 1946.
