|
The Golden Triangle in the Summer of 1954. The new Gateway Center buildings stand bright against the dingy soot stained brick buildings to their rear. The Point is still bare, but work is in progress to on the Monongahela riverfront to construct the wharf retaining walls and the supports for the Fort Pitt Bridge, soon to enter the construction phase. There is a block of buildings on the riverfront that were saved from the wrecking ball, and construction will soon begin on 4 Gateway Center. The Gateway Center buildings were the first modern skyscrapers built of aluminum. |

The Golden Triangle looks like a big parking lot. All that remains is the Fort Pitt blockhouse, the Caretakers House and a small portion of turf that will someday be the site of the Fort Pitt Museum. Everything else will be rebuilt from the ground up. |
