This is Pittsburgh in 1852, as shown on this steel engraving by German artist Edouard Willmann. It shows a good view of John A. Roebling's new Smithfield Street Bridge, the suspension bridge that replaced the old Monongahela Bridge after the great fire in 1845. Also prominent is the Allegheny County Courthouse standing tall on Grant's Hill. The newly built courthouse is the forerunner to today's building, erected in 1888. |
