Pittsburgh's Golden Triangle - 1849

The Golden Triangle 1849

This is Pittsburgh in 1849, as shown on this colored lithograph from a sketch by B. F. Smith. At this time the city's population was approximately 45,000 and manufacturing was approaching $50,000,000 per year. The three rivers and the Pennsylvania Canal were still the main forms of transportation, but soon will come the dawn of the age of the railroads.
