The Carnegie Institute in Oakland. This is the home of the Main Branch of the Carnegie Library and the Carnegie Museum of Natural Arts. It is located off Forbes Avenue on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. In 1890, industialist turned philanthopist Andrew Carnegie offered a million dollars for the erection of a library. When completed in 1895, Carnegie had added a further $35 million for construction of a Museum and Art Gallery, a Technical School, and other departments. The Carnegie Technology School, now Carnegie-Mellon University, is one of the nation's leaders in the advancement of technologies like robotics. The 100 year old institution is one of the premier technical schools in the world. The Carnegie Institute stands at the entrance to Schenley Park, one of the regions older parks and a landscape full of beautiful scenes, bridges and other attractions. The Institute is but one of the many legacies of Andrew Carnegie. For more information on the Carnegie Library go to www.clpgh.org. For information on the Museum of Arts, go to www.cmoa.org. |

Here is an aerial view of Oakland taken in the early 1990s. It shows a bit of Schenley Park in the left foreground, with Carnegie Mellon University and the Carnegie Institute on the right. The University of Pittsburgh, with the Hillman Library, the Cathedral of Learning and the campus buildings are in the center. The skyscrapers and bridges of the city of Pittsburgh stand in the background. An interesting view as normally we see things from the other direction, with the city in the foreground and Oakland in the distance. |
