The Bloomfield Bridge

The original Bloomfield Bridge was built early in the 1900s and connected Liberty Avenue in the Bloomfield district with Grant Boulevard (Bigelow Boulevard) on the other side of the valley. It was a span of major importance as it shortened the trip to Bloomfield, eliminating the long loop around Baum Boulevard or the arduous haul along Liberty Avenue. The photo below shows the old bridge during construction. In the early 1970s, the aging bridge was dismantled and not replaced with a modern span until the mid-1980s, at which time a decade of frustration ended and easy access to Bloomfield was restored, much to the delight of city travelers. |
