The Allegheny River in 1906. The
old Sixth and Seventh Street bridges span the river as empty barges make
the trip back to West Virginia for another load of coal to feed the steel
furnaces upriver. Many buildings on the riverfront are still there today.
The photo below shows both riverbanks and includes the old Exposition
Park, then the home of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The bottom photo shows
the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Station on the north bank of the
river. The building was nicknamed the "Ark" as it was frequently
submerged when the river rose. |
