The annual Brookline Breeze 5K
Run/Walk attracts a large gathering to the Recreation Center in early
August. The 5K run/walk, organized annually by Pittsburgh Citiparks, is
accompanied by a 1 mile fun run for the children. The Brookline Breeze
has been a tradition in the community since the first run in 1982.
Race proceeds benefit the Brookline Area Food Bank, Meals on Wheels,
Brookline Area Recreation Programs, and Brookline Regional
Catholic.
The Breeze attracts hundreds of runners
and walkers from around the city, and it is one of the showcase events
on the Citiparks yearly calendar. The post-race awards presentation takes
place in the children's playground area and a picnic type atmosphere prevails.
All runners receive a shirt, race pack, and are treated to refreshments
after the race.
After the awards presentation, several
prizes are raffled off to race participants. There's something for everyone
at the Brookline Breeze, and it's one of the many things that makes the
community of Brookline a Special Place.
The race is co-sponsored by CitiParks
and the Brookline Chamber of Commerce, along with several other local
and corporate sponsors. Special thanks go out to longtime Race Director Mike
Radley for the many years he has devoted to the Brookline Breeze, and to
current Race Director Debbie Brust for taking the reigns and keeping the
tradition alive. Together, they're combined efforts have turned the Brookline
Breeze into one of the premier community races in Pittsburgh.
After the 25th Annual
running of the
Breeze on August 12, 2006, three of the race's founding father's were
honored for their service and dedication to the race. Jim
Turcol, Mike Radley and Danny O'Brien were each presented with a special gift to the delight of the
onlooking crowd of running enthusiasts. Back in 1982, they had an idea.
Twenty-six years later that idea is still alive and running.
