Life On The Farm
Margaret, Emma and William gathering hay for the horses. Sadie, the family tailor, made the hats that the women are wearing, and they were made long in the back to keep the sun off their necks when they were out in the fields. Note the homes on Breining Street in the rear of the farm. |
Sadie, Emma, Mayme and Mabel Anderson making Apple Butter. The girls would bottle the product and sell it to the local markets on Brookline Boulevard. It was a much prized treat and a big hit with the local population. |
Making ketchup was another Anderson family tradition. The finished product was bottled and sold at the local markets. If you've ever been by the Heinz plant when they were making ketchup, you know how sweet the aroma that fills the air. It must have been a pleasant change of atmosphere for those close to the farm from the city's usual smokey mill smell. |
